How do I get rid of ants in the home without using commercial sprays??

we have been experiencing ants in our home right before a big rain. They just seem to appear. Most of the time they are around the kitchen sink and we have found some in the bathroom.

    Hi Stephanie,

Here's an article with some ideas. I've used the confectioner's sugar with borax successfully. Wishing you the best.

Hi Stephanie! I have had good results with diatomaceous earth. You sprinkle it around the exterior walls of the house inside (you can do it outside, too but, it doesn't last as long) and any place you see them coming in. I always do my doors at the bottom, too. They take it back to the nest and it kills them. Don't make dust with it, because it will irritate your lungs if you breathe it in.

Hello, I had the same problem and I bought Combat Ant Killing Bait Strips and within 3 days I did not see any and I have not seen any since. Here is a link to them on Walmart so you can see what the package looks like, but I got mine on ebay. I even layed a couple outside where I seen ants just to make sure.

This sounds crazy, Stephanie, but it always works for me. Spray the area where the ants are with Windex. The ones that get sprayed die instantly. Wipe it clean a couple of hours later and you won't see an ant till the next year during "ant season!" I don't know how this does the job, but I've used this trick for several years.

  • This is a great all-natural ant spray DIY that works really well. Good luck! Hugs, Holly

This is a solution I saw on another website. The person said to use WD-40 and it does work at least for me. The ants were entering in the vicinity of the window through gaps between backsplash and wall. I sprayed those areas and have been ant free for this summer.

Whole cloves sprinkled around where they are they will leave. I had them in my pantry I sprinkled whole cloves on shelves they disappeared

  • I use packaged cornbread mix that says it is sweetened and put it where they are. They will take it to the mound, everyone will eat it and die, they can't digest the cornmeal, but will take it because it is sweetened. Little goes a long way.

I read this from : Itsmemic

Medicated powder from the Dollar Tree. It has eucalyptus in it...menthol...I puff it around my homes foundation..and inside under my birdcages in the cracks under moldings. Work immediately and they never come back. I do this at the first sign of ants..in one day..GONE. The powder is in a very large container and lasts quite awhile too !! And smells great !

Not toxic to my birds OR dog

What if you make a barrier around the house.

I did some research, since we know what works for one person doesn't always work for another. I found this site and it's pretty informative. I know some tips you may not be able to use but there are some good ones also that will hopefully help.

Ants are so weird. One time I found them inside the freezer in the garage!! What would possess them to go inside a freezer only to die? They must have sent signals back or something ~ there were no ant trails only a freezer full of dead ants. Hasn't happened since.
