I moved from CT to SC...wow, from easy breezy rich soil to hard as brick clay soil. Decided to make garden beds instead of dealing with the clay.
Batch one
Step one: Went to the local tire store, they said help yourself to the pile of used tires, less they have to haul away. Took em home, washed them with a hand brush and spray cleanser.
Compiling the flower beds

Step 2: Took 2 for a deck planter. To make it easier to move around the deck, I dropped a plastic liner in it and filled the inside sides of the tires with plastic containers (also less soil required).
Step 3: Create... I piled them up, filled with purchased soil, I purchased perennial plants, easy upkeep, just water and weed each year. The deck planter is for tomatoes, and added lady bug antennas (dowels and little whiffle balls).
Oh.. the frosted lipstick is actually fingernail polish, and sprayed over it with clear spray sealer
Suggested materials:
  • Tires: free   (Local tire store)
  • Spray paint and primer in one, $4 can, one can per tire   (Walmart)
  • Soil, 5 bags $10 spring sale   (Home Depot)

I've used tires before and they work great! I haven't painted them though so this is a new and pretty addition to using them. Thank you.
