How do I solve this problem of the space between my house and detached garage? Grass will not grow here and every time it rains, it’s just a muddy mess. The only thing I could think of is maybe a wooden bridge or walkway but not sure if that’s the direction I need to go. I also have a very tight budget when it comes to this project. It’s about 8 ft long and 3 1/2 ‘ wide.

What about putting pavers down? They are not very expensive and right now you may even find them on summer clearance.
you could lay pavers or old brick, a lot of times you can find piles of brick people just want hauled off - you could level it, lay the bricks and lay sand in the lines. Here are some other ideas. Also you could level it out some and pour in pea gravel which is cheap by the bag- you could lay plastic under the pea gravel to help fill in the space.

Had a similar situation in last house I was in. I found pavers in the free section of Craigslist and laid a simple path of pavers. I did no prep and only had enough pavers to give me a place to step. Then had a pick-up truck bed full of free gravel delivered from someone changing their landscape (I did pay them for the delivery). Worked great for the years I was in that house!
I also put down inexpensive pavers, then poured pea gravel all around them, level with the tops of the pavers.

As a temp. fix for a few years, you could lay old Pallets down! Level it off and lay a weed membrane then the pallets. Or lay Shingle on top of the membrane, or Stepping stones t with shingle around them! Best wishes
Grass may not grow but shade plants like ferns, Lenten rose, hostas as well as others will. Lay a paver path the width you need, put some soil in on either side and line the path with plants. Not only is this plan practical but if you keep the plants watered; beautiful as well.
What about adding pavers to that area? You can add some plants in pots to dress the space a little.
A load of river rock would cover this nicely. Put down landscape fabric first to block weeds. :)
