How do I lay tile/flooring over existing tile?

We live in a 60's rental home that we are allowed to update. The flooring in the dining room/kitchen is old, discolored and "dinged up". We'd like to put down something new, but we're hoping there is a way to do that over top of the existing floor. Thanks!

Hi! We own our home, but, I used double sided underlayment in a small bathroom several years ago and the linoleum I put down over it is holding strong. I’m guessing this is linoleum?
If the floor is level you can do this but may need a sub floor or if they don’t care, go over it and get the right glue to stick to the linoleum. If the floor is loose or damaged I would not go over it.

See if your update can be taken off of the rent since he gets to keep it.
If it is a ceramic or porcelain tile, it would really be best to remove them before putting new ones down.
This is actually linoleum (older farmhouse). Thanks for the good advice.
Are you speaking of vinyl tile flooring over vinyl or ceramic over ceramic? Thanks!
