There is a standard clothes closet for my 20+ daughter who has A LOT of clothes. It has a clothes bar, a shelf overhead and we put in a shoe cubby at the bottom, which is an issue because of the clothes above. Please give me tips to organize the closet and utilize the space to the best of its ability.

I'm not sure if this will help, but my daughter has a similar problem. Her closet is really small and she has a lot of cloths and shoes. We bought some clear storage boxes that we put under her bed. They've been clearly labelled so if she's looking for a sweater she pulls the sweater and jersey one out. It was either that or tell her she's not allowed to buy any more clothes, which we did consider

  • How about storing shoes under the bed? (I have a lot of shoes myself.) Pick up old baking trays at a second hand or thrift store and clean them up and paint them to coordinate with your decor. Pile shoes in boxes or bins on the trays and slide under the bed. If you have wood floors, glue felt to the bottom so it does not scratch. Also for the shelves, use pretty boxes and bins, stackable if you have the height to store out of season clothes, purses, scarves and accessories. That should free up some space. If the room is big enough for some sort of dresser, that would help too.

check out the John Louis Home wooden closet system @ Amazon. We got 2 & customized our master walk in several years ago and are very happy with them. My handy husband and son installed them. On my side, we did double hanging rods with a smaller single hanging space for longer dresses, and I bought fabric covered bins to store smaller item on the shelf tower. The two long top shelves are for shoe boxes. I’m sure one system would work well for a single closet.

Can you give us a picture or a little more information? What kind of door does the closet have? How wide is it? There are many storage options at container stores, hardware stores and even the dollar store.

Can you rearrange the closet so that half the space has double rods (for slacks, blouses, jackets), with the remainder having a shorter bar hung higher for dresses, and the leftover space being a tower of 45 degree angled/ flat shelves for shoes/boots? Some people prefer having their shoes and boots on a top shelf, spanning the closet, with dress rod and double clothes rod below the shoe shelf. You can then organize clothes by length, outfit/complementary pieces or by colors.

You could hang only shirts and skirts on one side leaving you plenty of height for the shoe cubby at the bottom. You could also take advantage of the overhead and store shoes in clear shoe boxes that you can get from the dollar store. I use the shoe boxes with lids for both shoes & purses as the lids keep them dust free. Good luck.

  • She needs to figure out which clothes she uses the most. Put out of season clothes in large suitcase (or suitcases) under the bed. If suitcase is too tall get risers at WalMart to add height to bed. For shoes I put a TALL bookcase partially behind entry door in bedroom. Put tension rod with shower curtain at top of bookcase. Add tie & thumbtack to hold curtain to side. Now put shoes on shelves. Still too many? Go to thrift store & buy a toy box or a bench or a slim coffee table. Buy risers if needed. Put bench or coffee table at end of bed. Put crates underneath to put everyday shoes & slippers in. If you go the toy box route, paint it & then put everyday shoes in there. With the toy box I would put it against a wall by the closet. For coats or jackets I would hang them on a hanger that goes over the BR door. Night clothes I would hang on peg hooks by the bed. On the outside of closet door I would hang a full length mirror. Mine hangs over the door.

Put the out of season clothes in vacuum bags, the air is drawn out, clothes are compressed and stay clean until needed, they are reusable.
