How do I keep my outdoor pond water clear?

Consider a small kiddie pool filter.

Without knowing the size of your pond it is hard to make suggestions. I have a pond 6 feet across by 3 feet deep. It has hyacinth and water lilies to keep the water fresh. I never clean it and the fish are in balance with it. There are hundreds of guppies. If you have a smaller pond you might need to treat it like an aquarium and put in a pump and filter like the previous suggestions. A small pump and filter can raise the water into a small bowl so it can trickle back into the pond creating pleasing sound and visual effects as well as adding oxygen to the water.

Remember, green water is not “dirty”, it just contains algae. To maintain a pond you have to consider size, sunlight, plants, and fish and work to keep them in balance.

Put plants in it

We add straw that is bagged to ours and it keeps it clean. They sell it at the pond store. Plants also help.

There are a number of sites on YouTube with good ideas.

The best couple I have found is barley Straw, a lot of garden centres have it, I found mine in a dedicated pet food store, I brought a large bail for around $15 AUD. Mo than I could use in a couple of years. I have a medium size pond, about 1 metre and a half long and metre wide, about 35cm deep, I have around 17 large gold fish.

I put about a fist thick of barley straw in a net bag in the pond, it will sink eventually. Have a reasonable pump, filter, fountain, to help remove Algae and impurities. The other thing is to try not to change you water to much, it will stress the fish and more so it stops the pond from finding its own water balance, most pet stores will do a water check if you take a small sample into the store for more detailed advice. And lastly, plants set at the right level's, my pond is a little to deep for some so I put them onto of other empty plastic pots to raise there Hight, with holes cut into them to give the fish some shelter if there are threatened. (1) YouTube/Advice, (2) Barely straw/Pet food store, (3) Affordable pump/filter/fountain, EBay, (4) Water test, pet shop, (5) Plants, any garden center. It may take a while, to get the balance, but when you do, its worth it. Sorry for the long long ramble, Enjoy you fish, as they have become part of our family.
