I was given my grannies old wooden cotton reels years ago.
I didn't use them much for sewing as the thread is thick and doesn't do well in my machine.
I remember when I was small, when I visited, she was either sewing or knitting.
Although she taught me how to knit and sew. I didn't like knitting much because it was a pain to follow a pattern.
I know you still follow a pattern with sewing, but not for too long.
I saw this challenge and knew what I was going to do.
I was going to make a cotton reel wreath.
Collected my supplies.
I collected the cotton reels, some wire, a florist wire wreath and some ribbon.
I started to thread wire through the threads. I twisted them at the back and spaced them out. I decided to use mainly smaller ones as they sat between the two circular wires that was on the wreath.
Wired reels
I then wound ribbon around the wreath, from top to the bottom.
I wound a contrast ribbon at the bottom and knotted it at the bottom, to give it a tale. Then wound some ribbon at the top and tied a bow. I also added a piece of ribbon threaded through the back so I could hang it.
I will hang it in my craft room. I think my Grannie will be proud I followed in her footsteps, as I love sewing.
Suggested materials:
  • Old wooden cotton reels.   (Had them already)
  • Floral wire wreath. Ribbon and wire.   (Wreath from garden centre, ribbon and wire already had.)
