Below is a link with step by step instructions on how to convert the arch to a square doorway. Sorry, it does not show the finished standard doorway, but does have good instructions to follow. Good luck on your project....I'm sure it will be worth the effort to modernize your home.

    Hi Chr,

We have arched doorways in our home and love the "country" feel of them and the unique architectural look that they give our home. When we widened one of our doorways, we had them give that doorway the arched look as well. I'm thinking about how they did them and reversing the process with you.

They used wood to build the support for the arch then attached drywall and blended it into the rest of the wall with drywall seam tape & putty. So to get started you should remove the drywall around the doorways, find the wood structure and remove it. At that point you may or may not need to replace the wood supports depending on what you find. You'll then need to add drywall to the area and any moldings that you would like. If you don't want molding, you'll need metal corner edges that are plastered over to keep them neat and prevent the edges of the drywall from showing or crumbling. Once it's all looking good, prime it and paint it or stain the wood molding per your choice. If you use wood moldings that you want to stain, finish the drywall, prime and paint it before adding the pre-stained molding. That will help you keep paint off the molding and stain off the drywall. I hope this helps you. Wishing you much success with your project.
