How to update my fireplace to fit midcentury style?

Should the hearth be removed and how would you suggest I reface it? I am repainting using a light neutral color. I notice most fireplaces that are mcentury are flat against the wall but use texture like stone to add simplistic dimension to make it a focal point. I do not care for extremely modern midcentury. Thanks for any suggestions. Have you used concrete boards or slats?

Kitchen side . Should I remove the wood and hearth?

Living room. Should I remove all the wood and hearth?

I would remove the mantel and tile then use brick or stone to the ceiling. Choose something that is wide but not tall and light tan earth tones or white. I always use the cement tile board on the walls when laying tile. I've never put up stone.

I suggest removing the wood mantle and surround and then applying a contrasting tile flat to your wall which will create the clean lines of the mid-century look. Perhaps use rectangular tiles for contrast and texture as well as contrasting color.

I would remove all the wood around the outside and replace it with simple woodwork. Here is an example of one my dad built. The problem is removing the hearth. Your tile may not be below it which would leave you trying to match your existing tile.

Definitely take off the mantle, surround and hearth and go for something simple yet rustic like this:
