Hi Michelle, I would sand it all down and then restain it. It will not be perfect but it would be hardly noticeable.
Sand it to remove any slivers. Fill with wood putty and let it dry. Then use sand paper to form the wood putty.
Yes just sand each section separately then restain
Use Elmers wood filler. This stuff is great.
First lightly sand down the wood with 200 grit sandpaper. Do one section at a time. As it is drying use a metal ruler and shape each section. When dry do the next sections. Elmers comes in many colors, but paints very well.
