How to build a handicap ramp?
I need to build a handicap ramp for my wife, the height of our porch is 37 inches.
My ? is what lenght do I need to Build it. and what is the best way to plan this diy project

Hi Daniel, here is a good example of how I would built it. The boards are hung using joist hangers. Over the joists you could use planks or a solid sheet of plywood. The length is really dependent on how much of a slant you want, I would thing the longer you make it the safer it will be.
I would suggest you first go to your city. They may have special requisites for ramps. Would hate to see you build it then have to remove it.
The ADA guideline is to make the ramp 1 foot long for every inch in height. So for your 37 inch high porch you should make your ramp 37 feet long. The ramp does not have to be straight, it can have as many “ landings” as you want or need to make it fit your yard space. That is it can zig-zag back and forth with turning places (landings) at each turn of a size which will allow your wife’s walking helper (walker, cane, wheelchair,etc.) to make the turn safely.
