I have a stairway that needs perking up.
Beautiful stair-treads. Paint the rise a color which will coordinate with the decor in your home. Many people wallpaper the rise. To each his own. Be sure and find out if the rise is painted with latex or oil paint.
You can also use wallpaper on the risers. That let's you really add some character to your stairs. Good luck.
you can use motion censor lites to brighten up the stairwell.

Tape lighting or rope lighting along the edge steps on both sides. You can even get in expensive remotes that plug into the outlet base so that you can turn them off from both the top & bottom of the stairs.
I put up contact paper on the backs of mine looks great
You can add tile to the risers, paint a different color, or add contact paper.
