Replacing carpet on curved staircase, wood on edges?
We are going to replace carpet on curved staircase. Should we expose wood (which would need to be painted) on edges that are not against wall?

I really dont have much room to work with.It goes down from my living room to a bedroom.
You can do it either way. Some homeowners carpet the entire step and others carpet just the center of the step. Others buy carpet that is already bound (stitched) on each side. Home Depot sells it by the foot in their carpet section or you can even have carpet bound at your carpet store so that the carpet runner matches the carpet in adjoining rooms. The tread can be painted or stained and it is just personal preference. I would look at magazines and online for staircases/treads that you like and that way you can see what is your preference. But first pull up a corner of the carpet on your tread to make sure that the tread is actual wood and not particle board/plywood. Good luck with your project.
It's a personal choice depending on the look you're going for. Carpet runners are a safety consideration especially for the elderly or if you have small children running and down the stairs. Best of luck.
Debby, How lucky you are to have a curved staircase! We pulled the carpeting off our steps and nailed oval stair treads in place on each step. You can also carpet each tread, either covering the edge or leaving it wood. You can then finish each riser with paint, carpet or tile. Whatever you do really depends on the final look you are going for, got good your treads are and what matches with your current decorating scheme.
