How can I get rid of and prevent wasps from building nests in my shed?

Hi Jan, my husband and I used to have a terrible problem in the country for a bit. Here are some great videos for you. We have always gone out at night too. There are traps, sprays for use with wasps, hornets, and yellow jackets. All are part of the bee family but each has some differences. Hornets are to me the scariest, usually black, build a ball-cone nest; they will chase you so the long distance sprays are best. Just spray the nest and wait until next day to knock it down. Wasps usually build a kind of flat looking, paper nest, good for one season and rarely used again. I prefer to spray those too, since I can't knock the nest down and run. Yellow Jackets build in the ground but will take advantage of siding and any holes they can squeeze their body through--to get in walls, attic, under rocks, dead fall trees. Will attack in mass. There is a treatment kit that you can use on nest once you locate their door.

Once you get rid of them attach screen wire to any openings like around eaves. Small cracks can be filled with caulking, putty. After that it will be a running checks around eaves to see if they come back. An occasional shot of wasp/hornet spray may deter them.

Above all be sure you are not allergic before you start. And night is the best time to go after them if possible.

I have had wasps in my yard for years. They don't bother me and I don't bother them - unless they decide to build in my shed. You've already got much advice to get rid of those. But the ones not in your shed - let them be. In 25 years there have been only 2 wasp stings and those were accidents - someone put their hand down on the wasp and the wasp fought back. Wasps are great pest exterminators from mosquitoes to any other insect. i leave them alone and they leave me alone - doing a great be-bugging of my yard.

Spray the nest after the sun goes down. They are in there and it's the best time.
