Ceiling first. What kind of defects? I'd you need to fill holes use spackle, sand down the hole than fill. If it's excess paints that have been applied before than use a primer maybe a couple of coats, hardware store and point you right. If it's large holes you'll need mesh, plaster and again your hardware person or YouTube. I hope it all goes well for you.

Ceiling first - buy ceiling paint. Flat paint hides defects the best.

I agree: paint ceiling first. Let it dry, then apply wide painter's tape around its edges so wall paint doesn't mar the ceiling. Be sure paint is thoroughly dry; go by recommended dry times on the can. Paint the walls as soon as possible and get that tape of the ceiling carefully so it doesn't pull the ceiling paint with it. Flat finish will not reflect light. That's what draws the eye with any degree of gloss. You could try an eggshell or satin finish on walls. Most paint departments will have examples you could see to envision how they might look on your walls.

I always paint the ceilings first. Flat then satin shows the least imperfections.
