This is a great idea, a handy easy access area for things you need and can plainly see.
Things practical & pretty-wash cloths, hooks or a small fancy bowl with jewelry (rings) , air freshener, personalize it to your needs and decor.
If you prefer, you could just put in decorations to add to the theme in your bathroom.

Glass shelves, timber shelves, Homemade cabinet, Towel ring, Toothbrush holder etc.
you can cut between the stubs to make shelves as well. They are really cute once you have everything completed.
