I have about 12 Peonie Bushes. In the blooming season they get so large and just hang all over the place. Someone told me to buy EXTRA LARGE TOMATO CAGES and put over the bushes when they start to grow and that will hold them up. Has anyone priced extra large tomato cages???? WOW, I'd have to without food for three months to pay for them ! I need ideas?

I’d get several fairly straight sticks/tree branches that are fairly flexible and stick them in the ground, three to a side. Weave other branches thru, horizontally, as you would a basket.

Could be handsome even as your plants fade. Needs be, secure with a bit of garden wire or small zip ties.

Hi Connie. I have peonie cages for mine. They were about 2.50ea at a local home improvement store. You could also try to tie twine around the plants. I do this to my Russian sage and it works well. I would tie them about 1/4 way up. If that doesn't work get 3 or 4 stocks or rods and place them around the perimeter of the plant then use your twine to tie to the sticks. Good Luck.

My grandmother used to use old nylon hose (like pantyhose, but just the legs cut off from the panty part) and wood stakes to keep plants more upright. Pound the stakes into the ground, tie the hose from stake to stake to make a sort of fence. She said that the hose were softer and had a little more give than things like twine or wire, so they wouldn't damage the plants. They looked a little funny when she put them up, but it didn't take long for the plants to grow enough to hide them pretty well.

At my local Lowe's the large tomato cages run 2.58 each. This was for the large powder coated green ones. Not a bad deal.

we use to insert wood poles/sticks into the ground close to peony bush and then run a rope around to keep them together, not too tight just to support the branches from falling down to the ground.
