Quick cabinet redo?

We would like to go over our oak kitchen cabinets with a cherry stain. Recent tutorial showed a process that did not involve stripping, just a thorough cleaning and light sanding. Has anyone done this? If so, how did they come out?

    Hello Laura,

Please consider looking over this product. I have found it quite easy to work with on wooden tables. Sorry that I cannot specifically comment about kitchen cabinetry results, the Minwax help line might be more helpful.

Minwax® PolyShades® enhances wood grain by combining beautiful rich stain color and long-lasting polyurethane protection in one easy step. It can also be used over polyurethane finishes, so you can change the color of your finished wood, without removing the existing finish.

Hello, I have done this before and it came out really nice. Just make sure you sand off all the shiny sealer that is on the cabinets so that the new stain will take well.

I did this and it worked great. I cleaned the cabinets with a cleaner degreaser called purple power. You can get it at Walmart for $5 a gallon, and it has many uses. Then I took my doors off so I could lay them down and used old t-shirts to apply the stain. I let that dry and applied a poly acrylic to protect the doors. I did the boxes when the doors were off. Came out great. 5 years later still looks good, Hope this helps.

I’ll pick some up, I’m talking myself into starting in a bathroom so I can get my feet wet before tackling the kitchen. Thank you.
