No. Just clean well and paint. It will take several coats. To make the chalk paint mix:
1/3 cup plaster of paris
1/3 cup cool water
mix until smooth
add 1 cup any color latex paint.
I forgot. You will need to seal it after it drys. With min wax wax. Or a spray polyeurothane
