How can I clean a rug that is heavily stained, high traffic?

The rug in my office is a med beige low shag style. From the door to my desk it has a 18"+ dark streak. I'm sure it is just from walking on it, there has not been any spills. I have used a rug cleaner, pre treated, etc. I tried using shaving cream, twice. It just looks horrible.

I would cover it with a runner.

If I did that, I or someone else would probably trip over it and believe me there is not enough room to take a fall without hitting something!

I use Zep High Traffic Carpet Cleaner in my Hoover SteamVac capret cleaner That I get at True Value in the red bottle. For touch ups , I use the Dollar Tree Home Store Foam Carpet Clean for stubborn spots using a soft carpet brush on a long pole. And yes I regularly clean the dreaded beige rugs..... I aways say only a male contractor would pick that as no woman wants to clean it daily.

You are correct in the male picking the rug! Zep is also sold at Home Depot, so I will give it a try, along with the Dollar store item. I wanted regular flooring, but that was not to be! Thank you!
