Using pallet wood is an affordable and easy way to create items for your home and yard. In this project, our contributors, Sara and her husband, used pallet wood to build beautiful planter boxes to accent part of their home's exterior.
Our tutorial will give you tips and tricks for making this project a success, so be sure to watch! Make sure to get your free, downloadable plans at Remodelaholic.com.
The first thing you will need to tackle is breaking down a pallet. We make this process simple. You can view our technique here. Cut the 2x4s according to cut list.
You could use pocket holes to build the box, but we chose to pre-drill and screw the box together since this part won't show. Once the box is assembled, start in the middle of one of the sides, measure, and cut pallet wood to cover outside of the box. Pre-drill and screw pallet strips to box. Be sure to watch the tutorial for quick tips on getting those angled end pieces cut correctly.
Now that the box is built and covered in pallet wood, it's time to frame it out. Rip pallet wood to 2 1/4 inches wide. Measure, cut 45 degree angles where corners meet, and attach with nail gun. Sara also cut a 45 degree angle along the long side of the vertical trim pieces so they would meet beautifully at the corners.
Around the top of the box, attach trim pieces as well.
If you prefer the look, add those farmhouse x's. This adds a fun touch to the planters. Cut and attach wood strips.
Because filling and moving boxes this size would be a monumental task, Sara and her husband built a platform inside the box (about halfway up) and then covered the inside with plastic or landscape fabric, attaching it to the inside.
You could choose to sand the outside somewhat, depending on the look you wish to create. Check out the finished product! What a pretty statement!

I'm totally inspired. We're opening a dance studio, and I wanted to put some planters out front, but getting ones that are big enough somebody won't come by after hours and just pick them up and walk away with them is pretty pricey! These will be perfect as they're big enough to make a splash, and too heavy (especially if I put rocks in the bottom) to steal!
