How to paint a deck?

I would use SW SuperDeck Stain & Sealer Remover first. Then a degreaser if there are any stains like TSP or Mean Green. Make sure all residue is removed then rinse thoroughly. Possible use a power washer with a low setting so that no wood is damaged. Once it's completely dry, lightly sand any areas that have remaining residue. Then apply a deck paint. I use a roller with an extension handle so I don't have to spend a lot of time on my knees or bend over too much. Then touch up with a brush on any areas the roller could not reach.

Bonnie, If I were you I would not consider using paint on my deck. Paint sits on top of your deck boards--it is not absorbed like stain is. Moisture will eventually get under the paint and cause it to bubble and peel especially if you live in a palce where there's cold, ice and snow. I am not sure what hot hot heat does to paint but I don't think it's any better. It is very difficult to remove unless you like sanding and sanding and sanding. However beautiful your deck would look with a fresh and creative paint job is just temporary. I wish I didn't have to say that because I have seen some really pretty painted deck ideas but I know from experience removing paint from a deck is a nightmare! Unless your deck is covered from the weather I wouldn't do it!
