In this painted furniture makeover, I take you through a few painting tips and techniques that will take your work to the next level!
If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you may know that I love using Fusion Mineral Paint for my painted furniture pieces, and I’ve come to learn that Fusion certainly lives up to its name and literally fuses with most surfaces extremely well.
When it comes to glass, metal and super slick surfaces, however, most paints will need a little extra help to maximise adhesion.
That’s when I either paint or roller on (micro-fibre mini rollers work best) a thin layer of Fusion’s Ultra Grip.
After the thin layer of Fusion's Ultra Grip had dried (leave a few hours to dry), I painted 2 coats of Fusion's colour Seaside, which was chosen by my Facebook Live audience as I demo'd this piece on my page. I allowed each coat to dry fully before the next coat (couple hours). If you click on the link to this full blog post, I include the full live video tutorials on each of these steps. icon
Here's the video where I share tips for my use of Ultra Grip and when to use it, along with painting tips for a smooth finish with minimal brush strokes.
After the two coats of Fusion's Seaside, I added a glaze. To do this I mixed about 1 teaspoon of Fusion colour, Ash, with 1 Tablespoon of Fusion's Clear Glaze. I applied the glaze into all the details and then on every surface, working in sections. I used a brush, then wiped back with a lint free cloth almost immediately after applying. Wiping back gently, allows the glaze to sit in the grooves and details, adding a beautiful depth to your painted piece.
Here's the video explaining how to mix the glaze and showing how to apply it and wipe it back as mentioned above.
In my final step, to add some extra bling and dimension, I combined two of Fusion's metallic paints - copper and bronze - to come up with a combo that matched the beautiful cup drawer pulls I had picked for this piece.
Using a dry brush technique (also shown in video below), I applied the metallic highlights to the high points of the details on this ornate piece.
Watch this video to learn how to "dry brush" metallics or any colour paint really, to add some highlights to your painted furniture. It can really make a piece "pop".
And here's the final look!
A closer look at the metallic dry brushing and you can also see the Ash glaze on the sides and drawers here.
