We are building a new home & have a walk-out concrete patio which I would like to make look like rock in rust colored tones. How do you stain the concrete for a variegated effect?

Hi, Jim. One way is to paint the patio a light-to-medium beige first. Then use stencils that are shaped somewhat pentagonal stones. You get these at home improvement stores or online. Decide how many colors of brown you want to use, from tan to dark brown. Use a pencil to mark each of the first stones by the color you want them, trying not to get two of the same color next to each other. You can draw the shapes with pencil, or paint inside the stencil. When the stencil is lifted, paint now. Then let the paint dry at least a day. The next day, you will need a brown that’s different from the primer, plus either gray or brown paint to be your “grout”. May sure the previous paint if completely dry. To make shadows on the rocks, use the non-primer color. Paint the sides roughly parallel to the patio door with that paint about an jnch wide, as well as the sides roughly parallel to EITHER the rising or setting sun. No stone should have more than two sides trimmed with that paint., and some might have only one. Then paint the grout lines, a little narrower than the primer showing between the stones. To add even more detail, you can paint some light lines on some of the stones, and spatter some paint on some. When you get through with all the details and trim, let everything dry at least one day. Don’t cheat! Then you can seal your artwork after you write your name on one stone. Best wishes, and please take photos and post on Hometalk. ☺️

      Thank you Jewel,

I was thinking of the acid stain but your idea is also on the table.
