You can use almost anything. boards, dead trees, metal poles...It all depends on the look you are going for. I have used the cross arms from power poles as an old ribbon style fence. I have woven old branches into a wattle fence on the outside of my horse pasture so that the horses would not get into the guy wires for the power pole.
If I were richer, I would put a deck board on the bottom also. There is a piece of 4/5 board on the inside that holds the panel in place. The posts are cheap landscape timbers. I have two mini horses in this pen.
