Paint a Plaid Welcome Mat

I had a hard time finding a cute welcome mat, so I decided to make my own. Rather than a cutesy saying, I wanted a graphic design that would work for most seasons and look great with my bright yellow door. So I decided to paint a plaid welcome mat.
Finding a plain doormat to paint was the hardest part. My local Bed, Bath and Beyond had this mat that has a subtle stripe texture. Luckily, the stripes helped keep my plaid pattern straight.

I didn't end up using the tape.
I started by painting the horizontal stripes first. Like I said, the stripes helped me keep my pattern straight.

For plaid designs, there are typically thick stripes in one color and thin stripes in another. I chose blue for my thick stripes and green for my thin stripes.
Next, I painted the horizontal thin stripes in green.

The texture hides any imperfections, by the way.
My thick vertical stripes came next. I painted around my green stripes.
Then I added my green vertical stripes, painting over the previous blue stripes where necessary.
After almost a year, my welcome mat still looks fantastic!
