Think of the room as 2 potential "functions" - one for watching t.v. and the other for visiting, games, or reading. Then arrange your furniture into two "rooms" by visually breaking the room in half right past where the t.v. set is hanging on the wall.

In the t.v. area, arrange the sofa and other seating so everyone has a good view of the television. Then place the accent pieces around the seating.

In the other side of the room, arrange the furniture so that it is functional for whatever other purpose it is used for. For example, if you want a place to meet friends to play games or do crafts, then make a table and chairs your centerpiece. If it will be used for reading or studying, then set up a cozy corner chair and lamp or desk area and place everything around that.

Remember---- a room should be functional first and foremost. Decorative next.

Would adding a long bench under the wide window help?

  • Move the furniture from the back wall. Angle it in a bit and add a coffee table. The current layout creates a hallway effect, where a seating grouping would feel more cozy.

Hi I am confused by your photograph. It looks like there are two large windows. Our l.r. is 15 X 15 but there is a staircase that comes out of that 15' + French doors on one wall, the adjacent wall to that has a fireplace and another doorway. We have a sofa and two arm chairs, a large hassock, an antique wooden chest, a small table by the front door and an antique table by the sofa, also a largish radiator cover. You have to let the dimensions and space itself dictate how you decorate a room. It helps to give advice if all four sides of a room are photographed, then people can see what you need to do.

I would suggest adding houseplants to your room. Did you know houseplants help to naturally purify the air? The plants also make you feel good too - at least they do for me. There are so many new plants on the market today that are super easy to care for. One of my favorites is the : red aglaonema https://brenhaas.com/?s=Red+Aglaonema
