How do you clear weeds and replant with groundcover?

in our yard there is a 30x15 feet area overgrown with weeds. I would like to clear it, and replant with easy maintenance ground cover. What is the best way to clear weeds and keep them from coming back? What plants do you reccomend? When is the best time to do this? We live in northwest Ohio and the area is on a hill. Thanks!

  • Vinegar will kill the weeds then you need to dig out. You will always have weeds, you will never be rid of them unless you live in a bottle. Weeds are spread by wind, wildlife and people. Once the entire area is cleared, look into sedum, there are hundreds of varieties and they make a fabulous ground cover that spreads on its own. Many have pretty flowers that bloom in the spring. Creeping thyme, creeping Jenny and white clover are also excellent low maintenance ground covers.

Hi Cathy. You can lay black fabric or plastic over the weeds. Leave it on for a few weeks, and then check to see if they are all the way dead. If not then leave it on for another week. Good Luck!

Cathy, putting something heavy on the tarp will help kill the growth in that area. Make sure those little devils don't get any sunlight or rain! ;) Good luck.
