How do I put sofits on the overhang of my house ?

I have a ranch house with overhangs that reach 14". I need sofits put up so birds stop nesting all around my house as well as wasps making nests. The birds are cute but make a terrible mess down the side of my house. Should I buy pre-made or construct them myself?

    Hi Anne,

If it was up to me, I would go with the pre made, that way they are uniform and measured to fit already. Just put them up, fasten down if needed.

If you are good with a saw, I would build them myself. I'm assuming you want to use wood. You can use BC grade plywood if you are going to paint. I've seen people use OSB but I do not care for the textured look. You may have difficulty finding 14" since that's a bit larger than standard so DIY may be your best bet.

We installed soffit on our back porch and shed using panels intended for this that we bought at Home Depot. Lowe's also carries them. They were easy to attach and solved our problem. Some are solid and some are perforated.

Hi Anne, there would probably be a lot less hassle if you used the premade kind. Make sure that they provide some venting so that air gets in under them, like the ones they install with siding when they do the soffits. They should be able to help you get everything that you need at the big box home improvement stores.

Have you tried "Flash Tape", Aluminum foil, of the "Eye" balloon to repel birds? They also make a device to attach to the roof peak to keep bords from roosting.

A fake wasp nest will keep real wasps from coming near your house.
