I don't know of any magic - just regular stain, apply with a cotton sock and gel stain works great.

I would use a foam brush
There is stain with the poly included with it or there is gel stain, or regular stain in the colors that are usable for any type of wood. Wear latex or vinyl gloves as stain will do your hands also.
