How do I trim a tall thin shaggy evergreen tree?

I have 2 20ft. tall, narrow, shaggy evergreens in my back yard against the back fence. They are getting very ugly and I don't know what to do with them ... trim them down or take them out.

What kind of trees? Call in a professional tree trimming service. Improper pruning can kill them. You don't want to have that happen!
Sounds like a cypress tree which is meant to be tall and thin,,,, usually planted in a row. Maybe it needs a bit of TLC, fertilizer for evergreens, the slow release granular type. Then if its shape is unappealing a bit of pruning.

Hi! It’s a little hard to see your photo but it’s either a Cyprus of an Arborvitae. We have the latter. If by shaggy you mean some of the branches are out of line we simply push them back into place. If they refuse to stay it we get some natural twine and weave it through so you can’t see it and secure that to the main trunk.
If if you’re seeing what looks like pine ones and the trees are turning brown that’s a whole different story. That would be bagworms. They are treatable however they tend to wreak havoc on Arborvitaes so they could end up with large bald spots. To treat them you can manually pull them off out them in a bucket and douse them in gasoline or acetone. Or call a local arborist and have them professionally treated. Could be pricy though and the bagworms can and usually do come back. Treatments will have to be done each spring going forward.
