If you are just trying to go on the cheap, you can either wallpaper or use high grade contact paper.

Buying cabinetry can be very inexpensive for the real thing, so I would keep my eyes open rather wasting time on pressboard, unless you are speaking of a kitchen full of cabinets.

Take one of the cabinet doors to the paint department of the home improvement store and ask them to select paint/stains and other finishes and application tools that will work for your kitchen. They have the best selection, the most up-to-date materials and most important, the most informative sales staff to get you what you need for a professional job.

Painting doesn't usually work on that type of material. Save up for new cabinets. In the meantime, I think the contact paper suggestion is your best choice. There are quite a few choices available.
