Take one of the cabinet doors to the paint department of the home improvement store and ask them to select paint/stains and other finishes and application tools that will work for your kitchen. They have the best selection, the most up-to-date materials and most important, the most informative sales staff to get you what you need for a professional job.

Hi Marie. Prepping for any painting technique is the most important thing. While you don't have to strip down to bare wood for painting or for staining wood darker, you do need to make sure you have cleaned the cabinets well; lightly sanded for the new cover to have something to grip onto and if painting use the right primer for the job. Once that is done, you'll be very pleased with the end product. Happy DIY'ing!
