The ceramic tile has begun to crack in my kitchen and living room. Could I put either sheet vinyl or vinyl squares over the top of the existing tiles, and should I put lauan down first?

Before doing a cosmetic fix, find out why you tiles are cracking. It could be structural problem. A structural engineer would be able to check it out for you. And after you resolve the issue, then yes, I would put down lauan first.

I would paint the cracks with a carefully mixed blend to match the tile. Best wishes ☺️

If its possible to squeeze a little grout in the crack I'd try it. If its really a bad wide crack maybe with careful chipping & prying you can get it out & replace the tile. As a last try I'd smear some really heavy duty glue in and on this crack to keep the nasty out till it can be repaired by a tile expert.

Use a Grout saw to SCORE the opening, grout it with same COLOR of tile SANDED GROUT.

  • You will need to repair the cracks first otherwise the vinyl could be compromised and you won't be happy with the result. I would rip up the tile and start fresh.
