How to do a 6 x 15 foot garden?

How do I start a 6 X 15 foot garden? I would like it big enough to plant spring and fall vegetables. Do I place plastic down to keep out the weeds and fill clean dirt. The boards will be 2x6x12 foot lumber and the size of the garden is 6 x 15.

  • If you put plastic down, how are the plants going to grow? Fill dirt is starving of nutrients, use bagged soil for fruits and vegetables mixed with compost. If you do put plastic down, cut an "x" where you wish to place each plant, dig a hole, insert fresh soil and compost mix, add plant, tamp in, add more soil on top. Planting directly in ground gives the roots room to spread and grow. Make sense?

You can use plastic, but I would use weed barrier. Water can flow through this material. You can stop the weeds from the bottom that way, but weed seed will still blow in. Most plants require 6 to 8 inches for their roots, though. Either dig it out or build it up higher if you are using a barrier.

6 x 15is very small. You might need to have trellises to support cukes and tomatoes.

You can layer newspapers thickly over the grass and by spring the grass should be dead and you can turn over the soil more easily.

What are the boards for? If they are near edibles, they should NOT be treated. A rubber (?) black lawn border set in the lawn will let you mow and keep a neat look around the garden.

If you want to start in autumn you can dig squares of grass with a thick layer of dirt, turn the grass side down, and place over the soil from whence you dug each piece. Then put on a layer of autum leaves and then a couple layers deep of large pieces of cardboard box.Weight the cardboard down and Just leave til spring for a nice plot. Unless it's poor soil. In that case. Forget the cardboard and dig lots of holes to bury your kitchen food wastes all winter.. The worms will be busy making good soil for you.

There's You Tube/ Mother Earth Magazine for more tips.

If you plan to use those boards for a wall around the garden, why would you not match the garden dimensions to the lumber dimensions and save your self the trouble of sawing down the boards?
