I have done this in the and am planning on g exactly that in my I'm trying to clear out and decorate. I have a small space completely covered in wood that I want to permanently 'ruin' if new owners love wood as my husband does.

Good luck. My shelves in the family room look wonderful and have been done for at least ten years.

Done this lots of time. You can cover the backs with regular wallpaper, contact paper or even wrapping paper. Because I like to change mine. I use double stick tape. Cut the paper to fit the back of the bookcase then put double stick tape in the corners. If it’s a long piece put some on the sides extra. Then start at the top edge the tape it to the back. When you want to change it just start at the top and tear it off. If you glue the wallpaer or contact paper it’s harder to get off & wallpaper you have to wet which can sometimes warps the wood backing.

You can actually save money by decoupaging images or fabric to the bookshelf. I did this to a bookshelf https://youtu.be/IDweS7_FltY
