Hi, SusZanne. Here is a video that provides some tips to hanging stuff on brick walls. I tried to hang a small wall planter with a nail into the mortar. It didn't work! I should have researched that a little bit ahead of time! ;)

You can also drill into the mortar joint and use plastic anchors with screws. A 1/4" masonry bit is the perfect size for plastic anchors. Buy a kit and you get the drill bit, anchors and screws.
