What do want to replace it with - metal or go the route and put up rafters and shingle it?

  You'll be really sorry in 12 years or less if you go metal roofings, especially in a global warming era.
  The reason your shed even shipped with a vinyl roof is because:
  
  A. Vinyl does not rust
  B. When it hails, Vinyl does not get dings or holes.
  C. The Real Global Warming threat is not the Warmth, [that is secondary, primary is the fact increased warmth brings much larger hail]
  D. Vinyl does not cause interference nor retain Static.
  
  Thus until that 12" Hail problem is fully reversed to a more realistic Size we can handle, go with either Vinyl, PVC, Roll Roofing or Tar, either ofwhich withstand at least 7" hailstones.
