I would try laying a thicker chicken wire under the gate and cover it with soil. The dog cannot dig through the wire. Also maybe put down moth balls- animals do not like the smell and will avoid the area.

I buried a row of patio pavers under my gates. Unless you have a REALLY big dog, the dog will stop trying.
