    Hi Ros,

In general the answer is yes, but there are a few things you should know about the form of the mulch and when they might be a problem. Take a look at this article so you'll know if what you have will work. Wishing you happy gardening! - Linda

Covering is okay in the winter months. Surround the plants in the summer to preserve moisture to the plants. When it comes to trees, it must not touch the bark, put small rocks or gravel there about a foot out then mulch the rest of the way.

Ros, it is only one of many types of mulch you can use. If you are on a budget, you can ask your town if they have leaf mulch for free that they make from grinding up twigs and leaves that they pick up and it is very good. You can also use grass clippings instead of cedar mulch. Check around for what you can get for free and price what you can buy. Most if not all are good for your garden. It's a matter of preference.

I'm assuming you mean around the base of the plants... yes, and it looks great. I use red cedar mulch in my garden and for all of my borders.

Absolutely! It's the only mulch I use. The added advantages of cedar is that it doesn't wash away (as much) as other types AND many bugs don't like it.
