Around here on the Oregon coast, many hollow out pieces of old branches, add a perch, and make a funky cedar single roof.
A girlfriend of mine makes them out of lots of pieces of driftwood, bits of moss to look like little hobbit houses.
Have you seen these delightful birdhouses made from Little Golden Books?
Although perhaps not exterior weather-proof, they would certainly be out-of-the-ordinary conversation pieces.
