My mother-in-law used a thin coated wire. She has an archway and at the bottom of it securely attached the wire. Then she shaped it half the size of the archway (she did this on both sides and met in middle at the top). She planted her climbing plants at the bottom of both sides and as they grew she gently guided the first of the stems and tendrils around the wire. By the end of the second summer you couldn't see any wire and the plants bloomed and looked fabulous!

Wear gloves when you are attaching and securing wire to protect your hands. You can get the coated wired at any hardware store. String/twine didn't work well. The weather dried it out and it broke. Covered wire won't rust.

The coated wire is available everywhere and sounds like a good solution. A wooden trellis is another option.
