I use my mother's method. She would hang a dish towel inside the door of the oven (the top goes over the door, so when you close the door, the towel stays up). Then she would pour ammonia onto the towel, close the door, and let it sit for a few hours. Don't worry, you don't smell the ammonia after the door closes. When she went to clean the oven most of whatever was in there had been loosened up enough to wipe it away with a sponge. I usually don't let my oven get very bad - just to avoid this problem, but when it does, this always works
Hi Jackie, 1 cup of ammonia in a glass bowl placed in the center of your oven overnight. In the morning, remove the ammonia and most of the "gunk" will be easily removed. Remove what you can with wet rags you can throw away. Then scrape and clean anything remaining and rinse a couple of times with a clean wet cloth or paper towels. I learned this trick a few years ago, so do this after some messy spills and before the oven gets too bad. This also works on the grills on outdoor barbeques. Just put the grills in a sturdy garbage bag, pour in the ammonia and leave for a day, then rinse the grills well. Works every time.

The overnight oven cleaners work great. Spray it on and leave it for a few hours - wipe out afterwards.
