Installing flat screen tv above fireplace

The area above my fireplace is wood molding and I'm not sure if a tv bracket would be able to go into the material enough to secure it. I don't have any ides what is behind the wood paneling I.e. Sheetrock, metal of the chimney chute, nothing, etc. Has anyone hung a flat screen on this type of surface? If so, any recommendations on bracket to get, advice on installing the bracket and hanging the tv???

What type of fireplace is it? Wood burning, gas, or other type? That can make a difference on what could be behind it.

@Thanks Nikki, that will help others know what could be behind your wall. I'm going to tag Bob at @Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com to see if he can help you.

DO NOT PUT THE TV THERE! I have it when a client wants to do this. For one think it is way to high unless you are sitting 20 feet away. I would like to get my hands on the "dumb-dumb" who thought that this is a good idea. Put in on a small chest somewhere, anywhere else! Be creative...

I will be about 15' away. I only want to do it because it gives me more flexibility to move the furniture where it's easier to see the TV. The layout of the room makes it difficult to get the furniture situated where you can see the TV without having to turn your head the entire time. Imagine sitting on the couch facing forward and the TV is about 10' away to your right. So frustrated. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I'll agree with Nikki. Unless you really have to don't! Mine is there, it gives me a terrible neck ache! Also, it really isn't pretty and I love to decorate the mantle. Yours is so pretty.. We used L brackets and attached it to the mantle,as we couldn't mount ours due to stone. If you do this don't get recliner chairs.

I have seen this done with a painting cut in half on hinges to cover the TV when not in use. It was really classy in a the home.
