Plastic lattice on bottom of railing.

  • Bring it up to current code. For a quick fix, plastic lattice will work.

    Chicken wire!

Depending on the width of chicken wire you bought, you should be able to double the wire over for a double thickness. Attach a 2x2 board to each corner of the house and patio, including on each side of the steps or walkway. Run the chicken wire from end to end, including across the “door”, using a builder’s or large stapler. Staple all along the 2x2 posts you attached with deep nails and wood glue, from the edge of the house and back around, and in the edge of the patio, with the folded wire. Now, where you will put a gate to the steps or walkway, use wire cutters to cut the wire between the temporary gate posts, down the center. Fold each end of the wire back upon itself until you can staple the wire on the other three sides of each post (or trim the wire so you only have a couple of layers on the end. Then install your gate, attaching it to the 2x2s. And you should have an enclosure where your granddaughter can play. Don’t let her ride a tricycle into the chicken wire, and keep playground equipment and sandboxes at least two feet away from the fence so that she knows the fence is not part of her special playground. The best to all of you ☺️
