Why do you want to change out the outlets? Are they not working properly, or do you just want to change the look of the cover?

Find the nearest outlet. Turn the breaker off to that circuit. (Plug in radio. When you hear it go off you have killed the power to it.) This will require attic time so plan where you want it carefully. You will require a cut in box, receptacle and wire. All can be purchased at hardware store. Your wire length will need to be figured , this is one item that is very exspensive. 6 inches out from receptical this will allow you room to work in your boxes. Measure up the wall and across the rafters and back down this plus the extra foot at outlets. You have power off. Remove receptacle. Note your white wire will be connected to the silver screw on receptacle and black on the brass colored screw. Now the attic. You must find the wire running through the top plate of your wall..push your new wire down this hole or drill another making sure you are in the same wall cavity. Make a new hole in the cavity whet you want your new receptacle located and push the other half of wire into the cavity. Now get out of the attic its hot up there. Go to your original receptacle and knock out hole in box or push into the one already in the box. Reinstall that box so it is secure to the wall stud.( white wire to silver and black to brass colored) remove outer cover on wire. You should have 3 wires. Black white and bare copper. Bend and trim the ends of each and unscrew screws enough to get it under use plyers to bend wire securely to screw and tighten. Do same for the bare copper on the bottom of receptacle. Replace receptacle and cover. Go to new receptacle and place new box against wall and mark wall for new hole. Cut out with sheetrock knife. If you don't have one I have used a steak knife...it took a while but it worked. Once you have your hole you must grab the wire you pushed down into the cavity. Some time up to your elbow....insert wire into a knock out on your new receptacle box and pull wire through. Insert box into new hole. Your cut in box will have tabs that will sprig up and hold cut in onto the wall. Continue to screw it in until it stops ensuring your box is solid. Now again strip the outer covering off wire. Remove the coating on the tips of wires and bend. Secure ends to new receptacle.(white to silver and black to brass bare to green on bottom.) Screw it into box and put on cover plate. Plug radio into new receptacle and turn power at breaker back on. Wow it think its easier to do it than tell how to do it. Good luck..always turn off power at breaker.
