Three Ways to Customize Laminate Bookshelves

Realizing my limitations when I wanted to build custom bookshelves for our entry-turned-library, I decided to buy inexpensive off-the-shelf laminate bookshelves and try my hand at making them look like custom built ins. They turned out not bad! Here's what I did.
This is what I started with. A nice shape and a combination of closed and open storage.
The biggest change came from paint. I used Rustoleum Chalked paint in Linen White, and it while it took some time and effort (a little sanding and about 3 coats of paint) it made a huge difference.
I also added trim- 1X4's to the top to connect the front of the units, and plywood cut to fit between the top of the units. I even added a piece of plywood and corbels to build in a desk area for my computer that I use every single day. This has been one of the most functional areas of our entire house! You can read more about how we did this, and see more pics, here.
Finally, I changed out the hardware to kick it up a notch. I love door hardware- it's just like jewelry in a room!
The result is a super functional space that we use every single day! I have a lot of fun changing out and restyling those shelves, and the closed storage is incredibly useful. Check out the post for full details, and here's a tour of my library!
