Less furniture in the room. Depending on what your room is used for, (i.e., bedroom, dining) keep just the needed furniture. Put shelves on the walls to help keep things off the floor. Paint in a lighter color will also add size. I also put my drape rods about 3 inches from the ceiling rather than 3 inches over the window frame. This creates the illusion of height in a room as well.

We had dark "wood" paneling in our cabin and I put white paintable wallpaper over it. It made the room look so much bigger so I decided to keep it white when I paint it. When I've decorated small rooms I found that using smaller-scale tables and chairs make the room appear larger, using glass-topped tables and tables that are open underneath, and not over-furnishing the room. Less is more. Mirrors on the wall trick the eye into expanding the space.

use mirrors on the wall which reflect light and make the room appear brighter and bigger. Use neutral or pastel colors nothing bold. remember less is more so minimal furniture and no clutter. furniture that is raised off the floor-meaning has feet so it doesn't sit on floor and nothing oversize. keep furniture to scale of the room.

A large mirror facing a window will open up the room!
