How to take care of roses?

What is the best time of the year to feed my roses? Fall or Spring?? If I feed and trim after a bloom will they reproduce more roses??

I'd suggest spring . Fall might push new growth that wouldn't harden off before winter . Now (August) is too late .

  Thank you or the advise. My roses are still in the blooming stages, this late in the summer. I LIve up in Maine where early spring doesn't arrive until mid May.

  I live in ME too ! Cut back dead wood in spring and fertilize . Don't know if they're repeat bloomer types , if so , keep dead-heading and you'll have new flowers almost til frost . The hardy , repeat bloomer types are great for ME . However , I've never fooled around too much with all the hybrid or tea rose types .... can have too many bug and disease problems , high maintenance for me . Rugosas are great , can get bad Japanese Beetles , seem to be fewer right on the ocean , for some reason . Rugosa roses can get kind of overgrown , I've cut 4' plants back to 1' and they love it . Also thin out old wood at the same time . By the way , I've never bothered with fertilizer too much on repeat bloomer (shrub type ) roses and they've done fine . Maybe light application every couple of years w/ organic rose fertilizer . If the soil is nice , plenty of organic matter , you shouldn't need much fertilizer for established plants .   Thank you for answering my question..!! And then some!! That is what I currently have Japanese Beetles. Someone told me to use a tablespoon of dish washing soap with a 2 cups water and spray both upper and under side of the leaf. And, they will stop eating the leaves Also, I never thought I would see the day that Easter Lilly would grow in the front yard of my house here in Aroostook county Maine. But, I planted them anyway and they took off. They look like beautiful trumpets and new growth beside as well this year. Thank you again for all the input on the roses. It is greatly appreciated.

A very nice neighbor of mine once told me that when you prune roses, prune them above a five lead bundle. Then they bloom beautifully again. Good luck.

  Thanks you for answering my question. My bush is 3 years old and I think I've been pruning them back too much in the spring, because I don't have a 5 lead bundle any where on the bushes. Thanks!!

  Might want to wait another year or two , let the plants get established , before you do any pruning other than remove deadwood .
