    in a nutshell;

    1. decide the size and location - make it accessible to a water source and small enough to be manageable after it's completed - you can also go 'bigger', but not so good to try to downsize.
    2. remove all grass/weeds/seedling trees, in an area that will receive at least 4 hours morning sun ( for all plants ) , or full sun for other kinds of plants. Some plants grow best in a shaded area, others require maximum sun for good growth.
    3. begin 'amending' the soil that is in that area with good mulch/compost or a combination of peat or sand depending on whether your land is 'clay' based or 'sand' based. Check with your local Agriculture Agent Office for advice.
    4. Do all the above NOW in anticipation of planting next spring ...
    5. keep any grass/weed growth pulled. You can cover with cardboard thru the winter and then it will have rotted into the soil by next spring and naturally deter weed growth; I personally don't like the 'weed barrier' landscape cloth -- it, impo, is a pain in the behind to plant thru, collects leaves etc., which subsequently decompose and allow weeds/grass to grow - and the soil needs the leaves to help the soil as well as holding moisture, supplying nutrients as they decompose;
    6. a garden - flower or for food production is an on-going process.
    7. plan on spending at least 15-30 a day 'in season' on it, rather than several hours on the weekends ... easier to pull one tiny weed than a whole bunch that have taken solid root!

    there are LOTS of YouTube videos on how to 'design/plant a garden' ...

    It would help to go look at the plants or flowers at your local nursery or Lowes. All plants/flowers will have a tag to let you know if it is a perennial or annual. Annual plants have to be bought again every year. Perennials come back every year. Once again, the tag will tell you how often the perennial plant blooms, how high and wide it will grow so you can allow enough room in the area being planted. It will tell you if it needs part shade or full sun, how much water, etc....

    Also,to make it easy to remove the grass in the area you plan on planting your flowers. Lay newspaper down on the whole area. Leave it there until it starts killing the grass underneath. Once it's dead, pull it out from the doors so it doesn't come back. When you dig you hole for each plants, dig deeper and wider than the plant. Use "Miracle Grow" potting soil. To fill bottom and sides of hole. I also like watering the soil with the Miracle Grow feed. Just put a scoop of two in a gallon of water and pour some over the soil. It helps get it started. Good luck
